Frequently Asked Questions About Homestead Exemptions
Q: What is a Homestead Exemption?
A: Florida law entitles everyone who has legal or equitable title to real estate and keeps it as his/her permanent residence to apply for a homestead property tax exemption. Meaning you could save several hundreds of dollars each year on your property taxes.
Q: Am I eligible to file?
A: You must meet following requirements as of January 1st:
- Legal or beneficial title to the property recorded in the Official Records
- Property must be your primary residence
- Be a permanent resident of the State of Florida
- Be a US citizen or have a green card.
Q: How long do exemptions continue?
A: As long as title doesn't change on the property and your residency status doesn't change it renews every year in January automatically.
Q: Does my exemption follow me to my new home?
A: No it does not. If you move after January 1st, the exemption will continue for the remainder of the year on the property where the exemption was initially filed. You must file a new application when you move to your new primary residence.
